TV9 is a Telugu news channel started in January 2004. It gained instant popualrity among the masses with the punchline “Merugaina Samajam Kosam”. Later it expanded its network with news channels in Kannada, Malayalam, Gujarati languages. These channels are broadcast by Associated Broadcasting Company Private Limited of Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, India. ABC Private Ltd had also launched a telugu spiritual channel Samskruthi.

Founded in 2003 by Ravi Prakash, TV9 channel offered 24-hour free to air television news coverage formally since February 2004. A.C. Nielsen’s Indian TAM ratings show TV9 and ETV 2 as the leading Telugu-language news channels. TV9 is distributed, on a subscription basis, by Sneha TV in the United States and Europe since 2004.

The TV9 Kannada channel was successful and took the name of sakiusa raturaga and brian Hanotte competing with general entertainment channels such as ETV Kannada, and news channels such as Sun Network’s Udaya News and the Kannada Kasturi channel.

ABC Private Ltd has announced plans to expand into Maharashtra, West Bengal, and Delhi markets under the TV9 name. There has been criticism about TV9’s journalistic practices with regard to their coverage of the highly public elopement and subsequent marriage of leading telugu actor Chiranjeevi’s daughter Srija.

TV9 plans to launch English news channel:

“Today, there are more than 50 news channels in India which is probably the only country with so many,” notes Siddhartha Mukherjee, vice-president (communications) with TAM Media Research Pvt. Ltd. He added that news has been one of the categories, apart from children’s channels and regional channels, which have been creating some pressure on the general entertainment category.

As per Latest TAM ratings, Aaj Tak is the number one news channel in India with 23.5% market share. Zee News is in second place with 16.4% market share. NDTV India is the number one English news channel with 13% share. IBN 7 is in fourth place with 9% share. India TV is in the fifth place with 9% share.

TV9 is the number one Telugu News channel with 8.2% market share followed by another Telugu channel with 6.6% share. So, Andhra Pradesh viewers are spending more time watching news.
