*The film was originally announced with A. R. Rahman as the music director of the film, however like Shriya Saran was removed from the project as per the request of the producers of Sivaji: The Boss. He was replaced by Himesh Reshammiya, for whom Dasavatharam becomes his first Tamil venture as a music composer.

*Major portions of the films were shot extensively in overseas locations which included America, Japan, Malaysia and Thailand.

*A role of a foreigner, played by Haasan, was shot for in casinos in and around Las Vegas and Orlando.

*A song involving Kamal Haasan and Mallika Sherawat that was to be shot in US was moved to Malaysia due to problems with Sherawat’s visa deeming she could not join the crew. So the crew instead decided to shift the shooting to another destination in Malaysia and the song was shot in posh night clubs; furthermore scenes were shot at a lobby of a prominent Malaysian airport.

*A large set was erected at the Taramani Film City in India which was a Replica of the White House, with Haasan’s makeup for the role lasting six whole hours to obtain the desired outcome.

*For the climax scenes of the film, a tsunami effect was created in Mahabalipuram. The scene was shot recently at a 50,000 sq. ft. area land in which a 100-ft. wall was created near Muttukadu. Six machines, which generated 20 ft. high waves, had imported from the US, for a total cost of 3.5 crore rupees. For the climax, another scene was shot dramatically above the Nehru Stadium with the permission of the chief minister, Karunanidhi. The film’s final shoot occurred on October 8, 2007 at Uthandi at a coastal village.

Controversy : Story plagiarism:- In September 2006, an assistant director called Senthil Kumar filed a case against the film at Madras High Court. He claimed to have created the story of Dasavatharam, in a script titled, Ardhanari alias Clones, and that Kamal Haasan and Oscar Ravichandran had stolen the script and left him out of the credits, violating the copyright act. On the basis of this complaint, Chennai police queried the actor and later they accepted his explanation with the high court sending notices to Kamal Haasan and the producer of the film, Oscar Ravichandran announcing an interim stay on the release of the film. The film was allowed to continue with its schedules, but the case was delayed till later in 2007.

However in September 2007, The Madras High Court dismissed the petition of Senthil Kumar against Kamal Haasan in the case, clearing the legal hurdles for the film.

Dasavatharam Review : ( from wiki )

Dasavathaaram is spectacular!

What a super human effort! That will be the first reaction of any normal film buff who watches Kamal Haasan’s [Images] Tamil magnum opus, Dasavathaaram [Images]. The film is certain to thrill and entertain the audience for all of its 165 minutes, making them feel that they are watching something unusual and spectacular on screen.

The film starts off with an incident that occurs in the 12th century when Shaivite intolerance against Vaishnavites was at its peak. An ardent Vishnu devotee loses his life to save the idol of Lord Ranganatha. Kamal plays his first role of Vishnu devotee Rangarajan in this episode which is marked by excellent technical work and the actor’s extraordinary performance.

From here, the film goes to a time when the whole world is on the brink of a biological warfare waged by terrorists. Actively opposing them is the American president who urges the rest of the world to combat this evil.

Meanwhile, a computer chip containing a vicious biological material goes missing from a laboratory in the United States. An in-house scientist Govinda [Images] (again played by Kamal Hassan [Images]) who is aware of the dangers of the material launches a hunt for the missing material, which takes him to India.

In the course of the hunt for the missing chip, Kamal takes on eight more characters and travels to many continents.

The film is a scientific thriller par excellence and it is certain that Kamal has excelled in his eleventh role of the story and script writer. It is difficult to imagine that any normal script writer can think of weaving such a fantastic subject that mixes intelligence with commercial ingredients. It requires an extraordinary intelligent mind to write the sequences some of which are food for thought to the intellectuals as well as ordinary people. Perhaps this is the best script of Kamal Hassan till date. Throughout the film, the writer, an atheist questions the existence of God.

Now comes the challenging part — picking Kamal’s best role out of his ten. Will it be Annachi or Padikkadha Medhai, who fights against the Sand Mafia? Or will it be the investigative officer Naidu? Better yet, will it be the 100-year old woman Krishnaveni, who still yearns the return of her son? But what about the Punjabi pop singer Avatar Singh or for that matter the former CIA agent, Fletcher? Will it be President George Bush [Images] or the lanky Afghan merchant? You get the point. So excellent is the make-up and voice modulation that picking any one character is difficult.

Though Kamal had performed many roles that were similar to the roles of 12th century priest, Rangarajan and scientist Govinda, you still see some novelty in Dasavathaaram.

It is very difficult to single out the best sequence of the film, yet the tsunami episode is perhaps the outstanding presentation mainly because of the top class visuals backed by a superb background effort.

It is not necessary to say how great an actor Kamal Haasan is but one thing has to be said; no other actor would have dared to take on these varied roles. And hats off to him.

As for the heroine, Asin, she has improved since her debut. In a way, Dasavathaaram is an extension of her excellent performance in Ghajini. All the other artists have also performed very well.

K.S. Ravi Kumar should also be complimented for his handling of such a complicated but challenging subject. This may well go down in the history of Indian cinema as a unique experiment in the commercial circuit. He has taken the best out of his artists and technicians.

Only Himesh Reshammiya [Images] fails him. Except for Ulaganayagane and the Bhangra song, the rest are nothing to write home about. However, background music by Devi Sriprasad is excellent.

So is the camera work by Ravi Varman. The special effects and stunt choreography are of international standards.

All in all, Dasavathaaram as an extraordinary effort.

Rating: ****/5 Disadvantage(s): Week storyline

  1. I HAVE NOT YET SEEN THE MOVIE “DASAVATARAM”.BUT SEEING THE TRAILER I CAN TELL THAT IT IS AN FANTASTIC MOVIE.I AM FAN OF KAMAL HASSAN.I AM EAERLY WAITING FOR THIS FILM.THANKS KAMAL SIR GIVING AUDIENCE THE ENTERTAINING & MESSAGE ORIENTED FILMS.BEST OF LUCK

  2. Well,,nothing much 2 say about kamal sir as He is 4godsake no more a south_indian actor, director, writer or dancer or artist above all, he is an “INDIAN” beyond all making all ‘f us uniquely proud and ‘coz there r So many things 2 tell n share actually on his inside n out..
ya i definitely am eager as usual to experience another mindblowing n inspirational creation, movie or another saga of acting of his, in dis one too 4 sure from the ‘Hindusthani”!
But what really made me feel hurt & stunningly shockd was the music of this goddamn1.6billn movie as well as the strange decision of giving the huge musical responsibily to an inferior & below-catagory music director who shudnt hav deserved or dared @ all to have the right to destroy a significant part’f all much expected qualities in all aspects from the controversial movie!! so thats not a very different or high attempt at all according to my whol concern from my childhood about Mr. kamala hasana & his all past attributes.
He said “himesh’s raw talent has hit into my face ” or something like that. I wonder personally how could that be possible anyways!! i am not interested in being obssesed to the wrong part of a great thing even neither i am least so in defaming reshamiya @ all! but i can understand the cinematic differences among ‘good’,'bettr’,'great’, ‘high’, ‘working’ , ‘not working at all’, ‘bad’ n ‘worst’ indeed! But i dont know what the hell was the strange problem in taking another genius there like Rahman the magician ! ….NOW PLZ. DONT TELL ME IT WAS A DATE PROBLEM! he can give i men produce @least much better staffs even while sitting in the toilet or in his closet than himesh could ever thought of in his 10 rebirth,s!
Many morethings were to tell & discuss but am signing off now. Let me now see dis favourite(even b4 seeing!) movie of mine 1st! Thank god 4 it hs bn released @ least shutting up everybody’s goddamn mouth! …..& i pray, may the omnipotent bless the creation as well from the release!
    _ Ray.

  3. Another spectacular film of Kamal Hassan.
A great effort which no actor wold ever dare to take.
His justice on the performance of all the roles is applaudable.

Just a note: Don’t expect too much from the film …but you will enjoy it.
I did enjoy the film better when I sam it the second time.
Its a typical caracteristic of a Kamal film. Each time you see it you get to see the
subtler side of his acting which you might have missed out. This is even more enjoyable if you are a Kamal fan.

Back ground music by Devi Sri Prasad is excellent.
However, the music composition by Himesh Reshammiya is cleary not of even a movie composer standards. Why did Kamal choose him ?

Roles played by all other actors is just brilliant…the guide to Fletcher, Asin, supporting actors in the US, Nepolean, etc…all have done a good job.

  4. woooo!!! yeah!!!!!!!!!! what a movie
    really enjoyed the start
    super duper songs
    and baground music
but i could not find the relation between the first and the last scene …..
